Dear Bloggers,

This year has been full of ups and downs. But in terms of my blog, there have only been ups. I started SWEATshirt DRESSshirt in February with the intention of sharing ideas with the world from a college student's perspective. This blog has become so much more than that. These past 10 months have been filled with new friendships, inspiration, learning, and simply... more than I ever imagined. I couldn't be more thankful for all that you guys have done for me and am really looking forward to what 2011 will bring. Thank you so much for all of your support. Remember that you guys will always have my support! Cheers to another great year!

I hope you all enjoy this re-cap I put together of my first year as a blogger. Thanks again for everything and happy new year!

I decided last night that my plans for New Years were going to consist of celebrating with my two best friends, who happen to be brother and sister. We're going to the house of one of their family friends to celebrate with good food and even better people! :)

For the fellow procrastinators who haven't found the outfit they will ring in the new year with, I have put together three 'inspiration outfits' that should cater to any type of party you plan on going to. Snake Braid

  1. Create a regular braid with about an inch of unbraided hair at the end.
  2. Take the two outer strands of your braid and slide them up as far as they will go, while holding the middle strand straight (see picture #2).
  3. Continue to keep the middle strand straight while you loosen the hair you just slid up to complete the Snake Braid.
I'm hoping that the pictures will be able to clear up any confusion, because I know I'm not the best at explaining things through text. As usual, leave any questions as comments!

You've Got A Friend

Yesterday, my roommate/best friend R and I exchanged Christmas presents. We were unable to see each other before the holiday, so two days after was a good of time as any.

I'll save you time and boredom by skipping to the good part. R got me a scarf similar to the one I always borrow from her, a gift card to my favorite store, and... her autographed copy of Sarah Dessen's 'The Truth About Forever' from 2004. I had asked her a while ago if I could borrow it, and she said that she would lend it to me when she got the chance to dig it out of her closet. When I pulled it out of the candy-cane striped gift bag she put all of my gifts in, I was couldn't help but to feel a sense of shock.

There is something you should know. Sarah Dessen for my roommate, is like Taylor Swift for me. R had told me a few months ago about the moment she met SD. She said she was speechless, a common reaction people get from meeting their idols.

plaid shirt: BDG via Urban Outfitters //army shirt: Staring At Stars via UO //scarf: gift from R //leggings: Jalate via Nordstrom Rack //boots: Steven by Steve Madden //nail polish: Revlon's 'Valentine', 'Red' via F21, 'Only Gold For Me' via Sephora

I knew I couldn't accept this gift, so naturally, I tried to give it back. R explained to me that she didn't need to have the book physically to remember the sentimental value of meeting her favorite author. She said she wanted to gift me with the book because she knew that I would enjoy it as much as she did.

It is moments like these, that you want to give someone the world. When you find a great friend, my advice to you is to hang on to them no matter what happens. For me, R is one of those great friends.

Inside-Out Braided Up-Do

Oh my gosh. You guys. I got a new camera for Christmas! This was something I kind-or-sort-of expected, but I'm still super excited.

This is "Victora", my mom's mannequin head :)

I didn't want to overwhelm everyone with all of the random pictures I took, so I decided to do a hair tutorial instead. One thing a lot of people don't know about me is that before college, I used to do hair... all the time. This is kind of embarrassing but I played with Barbies until I was 8, because I loved doing hair so much.

Anyway, this hairstyle requires you to french braid inside out, which I learned to do earlier this year. For those who are a little rusty on this technique or would like to learn how to do it, here is a really great video to watch.

But if you are already an expert, you may want to skip to these steps on how to obtain the "Inside-Out Braided Up-Do":
  1. Comb back hair and spritz in a small amount of hairspray. If you have layered or thick hair, you  may want to add a little more.
  2. Grab a small chunk of hair from the left side of your head, just above your ear, and begin braiding. Some tips: Be sure to guide your braid in a horizontal direction, because you eventually want the tail to end by your right ear. Also, this hairstyle is similar to the classic french braid in that you add in hair. Except, this time, you should only be adding to the top side of the braid (or the "right" side if you are tilting your head to see the braid vertically).
  3. Keep on braiding until you run out of hair and secure the end with an elastic.
  4. Optional: loosen the braid by gently tugging at its' sides for a more natural look.
  5. Take the end of your braid and loop it under the right side of the nape of your neck to create a braided bun. Secure with a bobby pin.
  6. Optional: leave the style as it is, or add a flower for pizazz.

Good luck, and feel free to leave any questions as a comment below! :) Merry Christmas!

The Olive Theory

A few weeks ago, I met up with my friend N for our weekly lunch date. We somehow got on the subject of  'The Olive Theory' (something she saw on an episode of How I Met Your Mother). N explained it like this: In the episode, two of the main characters are sitting in a restaurant with a dish of olives in the middle of their table. Person 1 loves olives, while  person 2 supposedly hates them. They are perfectly happy. The underlying meaning implies that the best relationships have perfect balance. Sounds a little like the phrase, "opposites attract", doesn't it?

It is universally known that for every rule, there is an exception. In my psych class, we learned that a majority of successful relationships consist of two people who are a lot alike, rather than very different. Think of it this way: you and your best friend, why are you two such compatible people? Is it because you guys have a lot in common? Exactly my point.

So you're probably wondering what happened to the couple at the end of the episode. Well, the guy eventually admitted to lying all along about his hate for olives. He actually felt the opposite and only said what he did so his girlfriend could enjoy them all. In sum, opposites don't always attract.

Wow, this seemed more like a jabber post than anything else. If you have read this far, I would like to say thanks. I truly appreciate your attention.

One last thing that is a bit off topic: My first college crush is officially engaged. I think it's time to listen to 'Speak Now' by Taylor Swift and do some plotting... I kid, I kid.

Gosh, I can't wait to start posting my own pictures again. The countdown begins: 3 days!

Marry You

This week's list for MUSIC MONDAY:
  1. 'Twenty Years' Augustana
  2. 'Strip Me' Natasha Bedingfield
  3. 'Everybody's Changing' Lily Allen
  4. 'Marry You' Bruno Mars; Glee Version
  5. 'Teenage Dream' Katy Perry; Glee Version
On Saturday, I went a bridal shower for one of my old high school friends. The last time I saw her was 3 years ago during my freshman year of college. It was so great to catch up, and I still can't believe that she is getting married! I wish her all the best, and am beyond excited to see her walk down the aisle next month.

P.s., My camera is officially dunzo. So, that means I won't be posting any of my own pictures until after Christmas. :(

One Of The Boys

To be honest, when the menswear trend first reached the peak of its popularity this year, I wasn't the biggest fan of it. That is, until I realized it was possible to embrace oxfords, blazers, and slouchy tees without feeling extremely masculine. Here are some tips and tricks that helped sway my initial opinion:
  • Focus on pieces that are form-fitting and flattering to your body
  • Add girly accents: lipstick, polished nails, a smokey eye, pumps, lace undershirts, and sequins!
  • Style your hair in a classic ballerina bun, curls, or make it sleek straight
  • Choose a menswear piece with a pretty print (ex: floral oxfords)
  • Incorporate one piece at a time

When The Going Gets Tough

Today, something miraculous happened to my roommate and I. We both finished our last final! It was bittersweet to know that graduation is just that much closer. Thinking about it makes me nervous. I've always enjoyed being in school and would rather study forever than be thrown out in to the real world. But the truth is, sometimes, we just can't have it all.

"Look at you. You're young. And you're scared. Why are you so scared? Stop being paralyzed. Stop swallowing your words. Stop caring what other people think. Wear what you want. Say what you want. Listen to the music you want to listen to. Play it loud and dance to it. Go out for a drive at midnight and forget that you have school the next day. Stop waiting for Friday. Live now. Do it now. Take risks. Tell secrets. This life is yours. When are you going to realize that you can do whatever you want?"

UGGs: What You Should Know

Some people think of these boots as the ultimate winter staple. Others view them as slippers that shouldn't leave anyone's home. No matter what side you decide to take, chances are, you or someone you know has purchased a pair of UGGs. I, myself, own a pair and realized today that they may have hurt more than just my wallet.

Check out this article on the long term consequences UGGs can bring and what you can do to save your feet! Btw, all hope is not lost.

P.S., I wanted to thank everyone for the kind comments regarding my finals. They are going well... so far! To those who are also taking final exams, GOOD LUCK!!! I'll be commenting everyone back as soon as I get the chance. :)

You Are What You Eat

This is what happens what I get busy: I don't have time to blog... and I don't like it. Unfortunately, this is how things are going to be for the next two weeks. Aside from final exams, I have an encyclopedia of a to-do list.

Please bear with me as I am unable to update frequently. :\ In the mean time, if you have some time to kill, check out these links. All of them contain extremely interesting content. I promise!

I Think I Need This

Since the day I discovered Blogger, I've been seeing links to ModCloth everywhere. I finally decided to see for myself what the hype was all about, and now I understand. They have the BIGGEST selection of dresses, each having their own unique style, along with a plethora of other fashionable pieces. I am most obsessed with the ModCloth Blog. Check it out if you get a chance, it is truly inspiring.

Something else you should check out? This dress. I think I need it. It's unfortunate that Online Shopping and I are frenemies. My parents have always been paranoid about their credit card numbers being stolen after buying something off a website. Somehow, that has rubbed off on me. :\

I'm Watching You

These days, white watches are all the rage. I feel like Michael Kors has been out to get me because I've been bombarded by ads of his white 'Runway Ceramic' watch like it's nobody's business. Little does he know, I am a college student who refuses to pay $450... for a watch. Sorry, Michael.

The solution to this madness? Get a replica! Fashion tip #28374: Your closet should be 70% classic and 30% trendy. Never spend a ton on trendy items because they will go out of style faster than you can say "Irish wristwatch" 5x fast. Instead, find knock-offs and replicas to save money.

City Sneaks

skirt: F21 //t-shirt: Banana Republic //cardigan: Nordstrom B.P. //tights: Old Navy //shoes: Urban Outfitters

My least favorite part about school is the last few weeks of every quarter. Everything gets so hectic and you suddenly have a million things to do. One of my least favorite feelings (I'm sure everyone will agree with me on this) is being stressed. My advice to all of you who are currently dealing with the chaos of finals, a demanding job, or just a busy life: don't forget to take a few moments out of your day to breathe. Inhale, exhale.

A quick word about this outfit: Yesterday, I showed you guys my take on the whole shorts-in-the-Winter trend. This is the same concept, just with a printed skirt and opaque tights. To make the outfit more casual, I decided to throw on a pair of colorful sneakers.

A Shorts Story

jean shorts: Old Navy //leggings: Jalate via Nordstrom Rack //cardigan: Rubbish via Nordstrom //t-shirt: Banana Republic //scarf: Roommate's closet //belt: F21 //nail polish: Barry M in 'Dusky Mauve' via BeautyH2T giveaway

The idea of sporting shorts in the Winter may sound a little absurd at first. But if you really think about it, this trend has got potential. To transform this Summer staple in to Winter wear, all you need are a pair of leggings or tights, a cardigan, and your favorite scarf. Pair these items with a good pair of shorts and you'll be the most stylish one this chilly season.
