Restaurant Spotlight: Morsel

morsel seattle, seattle restaurants, university way, the university district, restaurants near uw, restaurants for uw students, biscuits and gravy, seattle foodie, the spanish fly

Something you should know about my BFF, R, is that she is the ultimate foodie. She'll stalk Instagrams, and drive great distances just to find the best restaurants. She's taken me to dozens of finds, but one to remember is Morsel, a hole-in-the-wall restaurant at the end of 45th street in the University District. They're known for their biscuits and coffee... but mostly biscuits (see below for a detailed menu).

Per R's recommendation, I ordered "The Spanish Fly" (a biscuit sandwich with prosciutto, a fried egg, arugula, and pepper aioli), and an almond milk chai tea latte to go with it. Both are a must-try.

If any of you do end up going to this place, I'd recommend getting there early. They close at 3, and their biscuits sell like hot cakes. They were in the process of making new ones right as we were coming in, and we ended up waiting 30 minutes.

This week's free wallpaper was inspired by my latest obsession: watercolors. I've been experimenting  with them on real paper, and finally found a way to replicate the look, digitally, with Photoshop.

6 Beauty Products That Make Life Easier

6 Beauty Products That Make Life Easier, boscia black mask, sally hansen quick dri top coat, insta-dri top coat, sugar lip balm, beauty blender cleanser solid, batiste dry shampoo fresh, stila stay all day liquid lipstick in beso, top rated beauty products 2014

I'm not much of a beauty junkie, but when I find out about products that actually do what they say, I'm all over them. In the past two years, especially, I was introduced to a number of products, with six in particular that stand out. It's funny actually. More than half of the products I actually got for free, or as gifts.

1. Sugar Lip Treatment $22.50- I remember getting a set of these from Sephora as a "birthday gift". I didn't care much for them at the time, and was much more excited about getting something for free. I later learned to appreciate them, and what they could actually do. This lip balm is hands down one of the best I've ever tried. A bit pricey, yes. But you really get what you pay for. It's thick, moisturizing, and lasting.

2. Boscia Black Mask $34.00- I was introduced to this product by my BFF, R, when we lived together in college. She swore by it, and up until now, I was much too frugal to invest in it. The only thing that got me to give in, and splurge was the fact that I was in Hawaii, where the sales tax was under 5%. It's like a pore strip, but for your whole face.

3. Insta-Dri Anti Chip Top Coat $5.99- My friend K purchased this almost a year ago and couldn't stop raving about it. It dries your nails in under a minute, even if your polish is layered on super thick. I used this top coat in the manicure you see above. My nails went without a single chip for an entire week! I finally got a bottle of my own this past Christmas from E, and will definitely be going back for more once I run out.

4. Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in 'Beso' $22.00 - I got this as a gift from my friend K. She got it for free after spending a certain amount of money at Ulta, and didn't end up liking it. I can honestly say that this is the best lip stain I have ever tried. I layer it on over my Sephora 'The Red' matte lipstick, blot it a few times, add a layer of lip balm, and it lasts for hours. I went out to lunch with R, and still had most of it on after eating a prosciutto, arugula, and red pepper aoli sandwich!

5. Beauty Blender Cleanser Solid $15.95- My friend N got me one of these for Christmas. I was skeptical at first, because after all, how different could it be from regular soap? Little did I know, it was -very- different. I used it to clean one of my brushes, and it was literally squeaky clean. You know that squeaky feeling your skin gets after you use a really great soap? Yeah, that's the result I got after washing my concealer brush. To top things off, my skin also started to clear up.

6. Batiste Dry Shampoo $7.99- My friends K1 and K2 were the first people to introduce me to dry shampoo. At first, I didn't like the idea of not washing my hair every day, but after learning the importance of preserving the natural oils on your head, I started to force myself into skipping washes a habit. The reviews I read online mentioned Batiste to be the most effective, yet affordable brand. After getting my first bottle at Ulta, I never looked back on my old ways.

This week's free phone wallpaper was inspired by one of my favorite vacation spots: Hawaii. I've been lucky to have been able to visit the islands three different times. The tiny pineapple you see above was a souvenir from my first trip there-- to Maui, to be exact.

DIY Pom Pom Bouquet (using low-cost to free materials!)

diy pom pom bouquet, diy yarn pom poms, pinterest crafts, fake flowers, diy decor, cheap decorations for your office, handmade flowers, tree branch crafts, crafts using macrame rope

It took me a while to decide on the theme I wanted for my office, but from the beginning I was sure of one thing. Whatever I decided to do, it was going to be extremely cheap.

I've been seeing pom pom bouquets on Pinterest for a while, and decided to try my hand at them. At first, I was set on multi-colored pom poms, but eventually found a better, and cheaper option. Don't laugh... but I had two pieces of macrame rope saved from a really nice shopping bag I threw out a few months back (I wish I could remember the store!). I unraveled them, and ended up with a bunch of really nice, thick string. Perfect for this project.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
Tree branches, yarn or thick string, a hot glue gun, and scissors.

INSTRUCTIONS
Making the Poms
1. Prep your string in one of the following two ways: fold 2-4 feet of string in half over and over again -or- wrap the same amount of string around 2-3 fingers until you run out. Either way, you want to end up with a 2 inch segment.
2. Tie a separate string around the middle of your segment to prevent it from unraveling.
3. Cut the ends of your segment so that there aren't any "loops" (refer to the last photo in this post).
4. If you used string similar to mine, this would be the time to further unravel it, if needed. I found combing through the string to be helpful. If you used yarn, no further unraveling is necessary.
5. Fluff!

The Rest
Once you have your poms, glue them on to your branches with hot glue.

Tip: for a different look than what I did here, use short, straight branches without twigs sticking out of them, and only glue your poms to the tip of each branch. See example here.

DIY Instagram Photo Display (for $4 or less!)

diy instagram photo display, easy diy project, pinterest party, how to print instagram photos with iphoto, instagram photo banner

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- Floral wire or string/butcher's twine
- Depending on whether you use wire or string, you'll need pliers or scissors
- Two thumbtacks
- Instagram photos. View my tutorial here to learn how to print them with iPhoto!

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Place two thumbtacks 3-4 feet apart.
2. Measure out 3-4 feet of wire or string, leaving about 2-3 inches of slack.
3. Wrap/tie each end of string around a thumbtack.
4. Hang your photos! Since this was going to be in my office, I found it appropriate to use paper clips. Another option is to use clothespins. I've seen mini ones at both The Dollar Tree and Michael's.

This week's free wallpaper was inspired by Blogshop. As some of you know, I was given the opportunity to intern for Bri and Angela's Seattle class a few months back. Even though I didn't learn a a ton of new things about Photoshop, I will be forever inspired by the things I saw (e.g., the beautiful decor), and all the people I met.

And even though you can't see them too well, the flowers that make up the word "AMAZING" were arranged by Jenn Elliott, a Seattle-based prop stylist.

Feline Friday // 6

As a freelance graphic designer, I'm constantly looking for new inspiration. An easy way to find it is through Pinterest. Lately, I've been seeing an increase in cat-themed graphics, which I couldn't be more thrilled about. I mean, two of my favorite things combined? I really can't complain.

For this week's Feline Friday, I found it more than appropriate to share a few of my favorite pins from this category.

How Save and Print Instagram Photos with iPhoto

how to print instagram photos with iphoto, how to save instagram photos to your computer, instagram photo display, photo art, printing instagram photos, instagram diy

What you'll need: 4"x6" photo paper, iPhoto.

Part 1: GET YOUR PHOTOS!
1. Go to your Instagram Webstagram webpage (this is different from your actual Instagram webpage) by searching "[insert your Instagram username here] Instagram". It should be the 2nd or 3rd option in the results. Make sure the link begins with WEB.STAGRAM.COM...

2. You'll notice you can't right click to save the images. When the images are viewed in a list, you'll also notice that in the corner of each photo, it says [T | M | L] aka "tiny", "medium" and "large". Click on the L, to get the largest version of your photo. This will open the photo in a format you can save.

3. Right click, and SAVE to your desktop and drag it into iPhoto, or SAVE directly into iPhoto.

Part 2: PRINT THEM!
1. Open iPhoto.

2. Double click on the icon of the image you want to print.

3. Go to FILE, PRINT, and click on CONTACT SHEET

4. Change the paper size and type to 4"x6" photo paper, then click CUSTOMIZE. Refer to the image below if you're confused.

5. Once in the CUSTOMIZE window, go to SETTINGS. Uncheck TITLE to get rid of the caption.

6. Next, look for the scale below the photo labeled COLUMNS. Drag the ticker all the way to the left, until it says "1", on the right side. Refer to the image below if you're confused.

7. Hit PRINT, and then PRINT again.

8. Once the photos are printed, you can trim the white edges around your photo to your liking (I used a paper cutter to get extra straight lines), and voila! You've got your printed Instagram photos!
