Fabulous Felines

If you haven't already noticed, I've been posting quite a bit about cats lately. There really isn't a real reason for this, besides the fact that they've been my favorite animal since before I can remember. Cats are graceful, independent, and sassy-- what more could you ask for in a pet?

In celebration of my (and possibly your) long-time love for cats, here are a few fashionable pieces dedicated to them:

1. 'Diego' Cat Pillow, Urban Outfitters $19
2. Multi Zip Cat Clutch Bag, ASOS $21 SALE
3. Cooperative Conversational Print Scarf, Urban Outfitters $24
4. Feline Karma Dress, Anthropologie $80 SALE
5. Cat Eye Sunglasses, Forever 21 $5.80
6. Kitty Flats, Charlotte Olympia $595 --Pro: they're the exact ones Taylor Swift has. Con: They're a splurge!
7. Cat Stud Earring, Betsey Johnson, GAP $30
8. Cat Bracelet, Topshop $20

It's always fun to travel, even if it isn't too far away from home. Two weeks ago, I went to California with G and his family to visit his grandparents. For 5 days, we enjoyed amazing food, great company, and daily visits to the beach. I couldn't have asked for a more relaxing way to end the summer.

Speaking of amazing food, if you're ever in Laguna, I highly recommend going to Las Golondrinas (Yelp page here), a tiny Mexican cuisine restaurant. I was particularly a fan of the beef enchiladas, and chile rellenos, both under $5.

Pins and Needles

Something I've been thinking about getting for a while is a cartilage piercing. Despite the unique look, I've heard a lot of bad things (e.g., infections, pain, etc.) about these types of piercings, which is why I am hesitant. After doing some research, I learned a lot of useful tips that are slowly helping me reconsider. I thought some of you (who may also be on the fence) would benefit in knowing:
  • I'll begin with the obvious: don't use cheap jewelry unless you know for a fact that your ears will be able to handle it. A type of metal that never fails me is sterling silver (check out this website for some good options).
  • Be sure to go to a reputable piercer.
  • Clean your new piercings often.
  • Even though you are eager to change into new earrings, don't rush the healing process. The wait will be worth it.
  • Turn your earring(s) so that the piercing does not heal around the post.
  • Know when to identify when your body is rejecting the piercing. In this case, you will need to take it out for good. Some signs to look out for: an infection, extreme swelling+pain, and long-term redness.

Fall Hairstyles

Two hairstyles I look forward to trying out this fall are the topknot and accessorizing with flower barrettes. The flower barrette you see in the picture above, is actually a DIY by my talented friend, K (I'm trying to convince her to start a craft blog). Tutorial coming soon!

This past weekend, two of my friends and I decided to have an end-of-summer photo shoot. Even though it took some time to coordinate outfits, and scout out a scenic location, in the end, the results were more than worth it. On our drive home, we even decided to make a tradition of it to have a photo shoot every season. I already cannot wait for the next one.

*Thank you to my friends, K and K, for being such great models.

Combat Boots and Colored Denim

combat boots: Steve Madden 'Troopa' via Nordstrom-- available at TJ Maxx for $60//jeans: Urban Outfitters

I haven't taken back-to-school shopping seriously since my freshman year of college, mostly because my style and height have been pretty consistent. However, when there are fall trends like colored denim and combat boots to swoon over, I make an effort to search for good deals.

Tips regarding trends in general:
  • Remember the golden rule: 70% of your closet should consist of year-round classics, while only 30% or less should be dedicated to trendy items.
  • Considering how trends come and go often, unless you absolutely have to (actually, not even then), never splurge on trendy items.
*Thank you to my friend, S, for being such a great model.

Leather Accents

A trend I'm excited to see around this fall is leather accents. Different from a leather jacket, or liquid leggings, leather accents give an even more trendy twist to the classic ways leather has been styled in the past.

Looking to try out this trend yourself? Check out my recommendations:
1. bebe Mixed Media Trench via Nordstrom $139 SALE
2. Lily White Faux Leather Peplum Tank via Nordstrom B.P. $38
3. Faux Leather Sleeved T-Shirt via ZARA $25.90

It's All in the Wrist

watch: Marc by Marc Jacobs via Nordstrom //bracelet: Mexico

A trend I've been gushing over lately is the Arm Party Trend. Don't know what an Arm Party is? Consider Urban Dictionary's definition:

arm party; noun: when somebody (usually/hopefully a girl) wears a bunch of different bracelets on the same arm, sometimes using many bright colors or different materials/metals is called an arm party. The more the merrier! That girl with the huge arm party thinks she's Ke$ha, her bracelets weigh more than she does!

If you're interested in building an arm party of your own, the best tip I can give you is to find or make bracelets that reflect your personal style. Don't really know where to start? Check out these recommendations:
  • For a clean, girly, and sophisticated look, try a boyfriend watch, a dainty chain bracelet like this one, a jelly cobra bracelet like this one, something sparkly, and/or a few homemade friendship bracelets (see my post about those here).
  • For a laid-back and beachy look, try stacking a few leather bracelets like this one.
  • And, if you're feeling crafty, I would recommend checking out the tutorials on the Honestly WTF Blog. They are seriously amazing.

1. Marc by Marc Jacobs 'Natasha' Satchel
2. Mossimo Patent 'Small Lady Satchel' via Target

Black and Yellow

skirt: Urban Outfitters

I'm not a pro when it comes to styling neons, but a tip I have for beginners like me is to keep it simple. If you want to wear neon, but are unsure of what complimentary colors go with your statement piece, try nudes, blacks, or whites-- 3 shades you can never go wrong with.

Out With the Old

This week has not been the most fun. With roommate drama, a presentation, and finishing up summer classes, life has been beyond stressful. To get my mind off of things this afternoon, I decided to re-do my fashion rack.

The neon yellow skirt you see above, I have been eyeing for weeks. After snagging it for $5 (made possible by a clearance sale+gift card) this past weekend at Urban Outfitters, I knew it was meant to be. I decided to revolve the entire rack around it, with neutrals, blacks, and denim-- the perfect color palette to celebrate mid-summer.

Change of Heart

top: Lush via Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Lately, I've been experiencing a lot of long days, and if you personally know me, you will have seen this first hand through my attire. These days, I've been resorting to jeans/jeggings, and very basic tops. As I think back to high school, and how I would dress up every day, I envy my 18-year old self, as the old me had much more motivation to get up at 5:45am to look good for school.

In an attempt to salvage what I have left of my motivation to look more polished, I've been in search of fancier tops that I can pair with the comfortable bottoms I already have. Here is one I found the other day.

Denim Days

denim jacket: Paris Blues via TJ Maxx $16 //striped shirt: Banana Republic //leggings: HUE //nail polish: 'Big Apple Red' via OPI //watch: Marc by Marc Jacobs via Nordstrom

In 8th grade, one of my favorite things to wear was a Roxy wool-lined denim jacket. I eventually grew out of it, style wise, and stowed it in my closet to remain as a keepsake. From then on, I never thought I would be as obsessed with another denim item (besides jeans) ever again. That is, until this past year, where I fell in love with the look all over again after learning about how jean jackets could be incorporated to my style as an adult.

Fashion Rack

Just a week and a half ago, my roommates and I moved out of our overpriced apartment, and into the cozy top floor of a house. It had been recently remodeled, with a brand new kitchen, and other fix-ups. Our new place was much better than our last place, not only because of everything that had been re-modeled, and the price, but the location had a lot more to offer.

Despite all the benefits, I'm going to be honest, and say that during the first two weeks, I didn't really want to be here; not because I disliked the packing and unpacking process of moving, but because I'm the type of person who likes to stay in one spot for a really long time. There is just something about being in a familiar space that gives me comfort.

Since I wasn't able to change the situation, I decided to make the best of it. I decorated my room a little nicer than usual, and got a fashion rack! I was really excited for this, because I knew it was going to be great way to find inspiration, and make me want to be at my new place more.

Fringe

Fringe is something that can be an accent to a number of styles: rocker, boho, girly, and more. Due to its volatile nature, dozens of designers like as Ella Moss, and Steve Madden, have incorporated this detail into their most recent collections. Who would have guessed that a trend from the 60s would gain this much popularity once again?

3. Stone Crotchet Fringe Top via Dorothy Perkins $44
4. Fringe Bikini via Miss Selfridge $46
5. Crotchet Fringe Eternity Scarf via Urban Outfitters $34

Dainty Rings

Something I've been eying lately is The Dainty Ring (TDR). Though it may not be the boldest accessory, TDR gives off an elegant and ladylike vibe, something I consider to be a refreshing change, perfect for springtime.

A few of my favorite styles have come from Catbird NYC, and Carla Caruso.

Sam Edelman for American Eagle

My friend/classmate, A, who loves searching for bargains as much as I do, told me about a recent collaboration between American Eagle and Sam Edelman. I've always been a fan of Sam Edelman, though, I've never been courageous enough to splurge on a pair of the designer's shoes.

The prices from AE's new line range from $39.50 to $59.50. An original pair of SE shoes can range from $49.95 to $274.95. I think I've finally found my opportunity.

Turquoise Rings

nail polish: 'Valentine' via Revlon

I've always had a thing for turquoise rings. They have the ability to add a pop of color to any outfit, and are subtle enough for every day wear. The one you see above, I got while on vacation with my family in Hawaii. If you ever get the chance to go to Honolulu, I highly recommend going to the International Market. Though, you may want to sharpen up on your bartering skills beforehand, as the vendors there can get quite aggressive.

Pleats

Pleated skirts were something I remember my mother wearing during the 90's. Although it has been a few years since they've been popular, it seems that their reputation hasn't changed. They're still how I've always remembered them: innocent, ladylike, and full of charm.
